During lockdown, the community spirit of Ballito really shone and we all found ways to support one another in this difficult time. We would like to share some of the amazing ideas that started in the last few months.
We could only walk along the promenade but all the locals still loved walking along and seeing the stunning coastline. One of the moms in the area came up with the idea of painting rocks and hiding them along the boardwalk for children to discover. The idea caught on quickly and before long hundreds of families were involved in painting rocks, hiding rocks, and looking for them in all kinds of places. People began hiding the rocks all over Ballito, including around the Litchi Orchard and Flag Animal Farm. Local schools and businesses got involved and some businesses even offered prizes for finding their rocks like a free coffee or a beautifully made cake. The group is still ongoing so don’t forget to look for these rocks around Ballito and post your finds on Facebook. Check out Ballito Rocks Facebook page here
The MSC Orchestra
This massive cruise ship has become part of the scenery in Ballito. The ship has been moored off the Ballito coastline since the start of lockdown and locals look for it with great enthusiasm each day. At night, the ship’s lights have become a familiar sight that brings joy to everyone who sees them. Recently the Captain sounded the ship’s horn at midday to thank frontline workers and people across Ballito went outside to listen to the sound. That night locals flashed torches from the shore and used their car hooters to send a message of thanks to the ship. We all love our friendly ship and the joy it has brought to the community. The ship can still be seen just out to sea so make sure to look out for it while staying in one of the beachfront apartments.
The travel restrictions have ended and we can now welcome everyone from South Africa back to our coastline. We hope to see you soon and don’t forget to #supportlocal
